The internet has created a world of endless knowledge and communication. Allowing to share photos and news to inform the public. While you should not believe everything you see on the internet without doing your research as well. Claire Wardle spoke at a TED talk informing the public about the dangers of misinformation. Wardle has dedicated her career to finding and informing the public. Her claim is how can we “maintain the internet as a freedom of expression” while not spreading false information. An example she talked about was a picture of a banana with some red dye inside claiming that the bananas had been infected by the HIV virus. This claim was false, but it only sparked fear in the public who believed it. Another example was a picture of a Muslim women with her head down on her phone passing by a group of bystanders helping a victim on the ground. This was taken in the aftermath of a terrorist incident on the Westminster Bridge. This caused islamophobia, sending hate across the internet. The woman was later interviewed, giving her point of view during the incident she did not look at the victim out of respect. Wardle speaks with passion when she is informing the public about not falling for the fake news. While the internet is a great place to stay connect with the world around you. You have to check where you get your information. Make sure it is a credible source. Look at the date, search the author’s credibility, and beware of bias. Do not be a fool and believe everything you see on the internet.
